Firstly, a special thanks to all of the alliance members and volunteers who helped us promote and organise Stand Against Extinction.
See below for updates on the rally, links and info on the Senate inquiry into Australia’s faunal extinction crisis and PYL asks and key reforms coming into the election.
The PYL Campaign Leadership Team meets regularly to move forward the campaign for a new generation of national environment laws. Ideas, suggestions and requests are always welcome, send us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org
Stand Against Extinction
On the 7th September 2018, National Threatened Species Day, we held Stand Against Extinction.
The rally actioned an idea you generated at the Alliance Strategy Day, following on from the Better Laws for a Better Planet symposium in March.
We built awareness of the problem: our environment laws and institutions are failing to protect our environment and we are losing species to extinction at accelerating rates. The passionate and inspired individuals who came along demonstrated community support for the need for change.
Australia’s Faunal Extinction Crisis
Submissions to the Senate Inquiry into Australia’s faunal extinction crisis have now closed. The inquiry covered the wider ecological impact of faunal extinction, the adequacy of Commonwealth environment laws, the adequacy of existing monitoring practices, assessment process and compliance mechanisms for enforcing Commonwealth environmental law, and a range of other matters.
Check out the submissions here: https://www.aph.gov.au/Parliamentary_Business/Committees/Senate/Environment_and_Communications/Faunalextinction/Submissions
Alliance member organisations embraced this important opportunity and made effective use of the PYL submission guide. Together, we highlighted key issues for biodiversity conservation in Australia and made a strong case for environmental law reform.
What’s next? Engage with your MPs on new environment laws. We will be providing alliance members with a toolkit shortly with everything you need to do this effectively. See below for our election ask and key reforms.
Places You Love 2018 election asks and key reforms
In the lead up to the Federal election, we’d love your help to call on all political parties to act for the wildlife, people and places we love.
To have a better chance of securing the strong nature laws we all want, it’s important we speak with one voice.
To help us all stick to one clear, effective message, see below for the ask that we’ll be taking in on behalf of the Places You Love Alliance to brief politicians and advisors.
Shareable election ask:
In the lead up to the Federal election, the Places You Love Alliance is calling on politicians to act for the wildlife, people and places we love. This means supporting our call to reform our national environment laws so they can genuinely protect our environment and conserve our biodiversity.
What reforms are we calling for?
Drawing on the work of the Australian Panel of Experts on Environmental Law (APEEL), the Places You Love Alliance is calling for four key reforms:
- A new generation of national environmental laws that genuinely protect our unique wildlife and the places we love.
- Independent institutions that set science-based national environmental standards, and operate transparently and independently of government, including:
- A National Sustainability Commission that develops enforceable national, regional, threat abatement and species-level conservation plans, and a National Environmental Protection Agency that has adequate authority and capacity to check for compliance and enforce environment laws.
- Guaranteed community right and participation in environmental decision-making
