Ocean Beach Protection Project

BIEPA has long been concerned about the impact that 4WD vehicles are having on Bribie’s Ocean Beach.  A 23 Km stretch of this beach was designated a Highway in 2008.

Prior to that, the only vehicles driving there were authorised Rangers and fishermen, together with the occasional local or visitor.

Since that date, the number of vehicles regularly accessing the beach has increased at a rapid rate with up to thousands of vehicles there on weekends and holidays.

This activity is not only detrimental to the living beach itself but dangerous for the drivers and their families, and for the wildlife (including critically endangered species) which rely on the beach for their habitat and reproduction.

Access is by weekly or annual permit but there was no limit on the number being issued (until COVID restrictions in 2020).

BIEPA has been lobbying for at least a considerable permanent reduction in the number of permits issued and for better observance by drivers of the rules set out with the permits, together with education on the damage unlimited use of the beach as a highway is doing to its fragile, and internationally protected, eco-system.
