DRIVING ON BRIBIE’S BEACHES

In 2021 a Bribie Island Petition was circulated via change.org regarding the unsustainable access to Bribie Island’s Ocean Beach for 4WD recreational activities.

More than 28,000 citizens signed supporting the following 3 requests made of Queensland’s Honourable Minister for Environment and Science.

The Petition’s 3 requests are:
1. DRIVING ON BRIBIE’S BEACHES BE PERMITTED ONLY DURING THE PERIOD FROM 6AM TO 6PM EACH DAY AND BE PROHIBITED FROM 6PM TO 6AM.
2. DRIVING ON BRIBIE’S BEACHES BE PERMITTED ONLY ON THOSE HARD-SAND AREAS BELOW HIGH-TIDE AND BE PROHIBITED ON ALL SOFT-SAND AREAS ABOVE HIGH TIDE.
3. DRIVING ON BRIBIE’S BEACHES BE PROHIBITED IN THOSE PLACES AND AT THOSE TIMES WHERE SUCH DRIVING WILL IRREVERSIBLY IMPACT THE HABITAT OF RARE AND/OR ENDANGERED SPECIES.

To continue the impetus of this support by citizens, BIEPA and the University of Queensland are now collaborating to document the detrimental impacts, specific to Bribie Island, of 4WDs on the living beach ecology, residents’ lifestyle, economy and First Nations cultural heritage.

The Bribie Islander community newspaper recently published an article on this subject matter which we attach here, in case you missed it.
